*A redo since everyone missed this bar.

The Monk's Kettle
3141 16th Street
San Francisco, CA 94103
Phone:  (415) 865-9523

Internet Review:
This petite bar and restaurant is both warm and sophisticated, with smooth wooden booths, a comfortable bar and a friendly, refined atmosphere incongruent with its grittier neighborhood counterparts. Of the 130 international craft beers offered, an impressive 24 are poured on tap. (Though there is a Belgian focus, beers hail from all over, including offerings from local brewers.) Ales are paired with gourmet pub fare: Niman Ranch burgers, artisan charcuterie plates and cheeses--and a giant pretzel with cheddar ale and mustard sauce.

***********************************************************************

TNDC Recap:

The Monks Kettle turns out to be a solid bar.  The beer list is extensive with Paul even sampling a blueberry beer (somehow it tastes like blueberry pancakes).  Tonight we found at that the TNDC website is an international website with people visiting in Israel and Australia.  Also, it was determined that the Luxor in Las Vegas basically counts as Egypt.  Finally, please note that these were only the notes from the first hour of TNDC as Karl left early while others stayed for 3 more hours.

#52!!!!

Bitter End
441 Celment St.
San Francisco, CA 94118
Phone: (415) 221-9538

Internet Review:
The inside is cluttered with an odd collection of beer ads, hunting trophies, rock-n-roll paraphernalia--the owner is a huge Rolling Stones fan--and even an old suit of armor named "Cedric," purportedly left by some unknown, drunken patron years ago. The clientele ranges from clean-cut college kids to grizzled regulars who've been hanging out here since it was called the Decatur 20 years ago. The bar also features an upstairs game room with two pool tables, dartboards and pinball machines.

***********************************************************************

TNDC Recap:

The last TNDC of the “regular season” saw Paul concerned about “Grade Inflation” as he noticed the scores have been increasing.  We concluded that the there was a direct correlation between grade inflation and the drink specials the bar offers.  A couple observation on the Bitter End included that if you showed up early you won’t get carded (for anyone who is underage and wants to participate in trivia night) and that the trivia is really hard.  We have a very poor showing as it relates to our trivia score.  Finally, Teresa earned her email address tonight.

Rogue Ales 673 Union St
San Francisco, CA 94133
Phone: (415)362-7880

Internet Review
Despite being a major advertisement for Rogue Ale (Rogue art, merchandise and award certifications pack the place), the atmosphere lends itself to the ultimate beer experience. The decor rides the fence between modern city pub (exposed-brick walls, attractive servers) and country speakeasy (antiquated carpet, a giant mural). The crowd leans towards beer hounds, especially at the bar, but novices will feel right at home. There are more than 15 types of Rogue beers on draft here, as well as a host of amped-up bar food, complete with pairing suggestions. Patrons can sample eight beers for $10, so dive right into such oddities as Smoke Ale and HazelNut Brown. Dead Guy Ale, however, is probably the most accessible. Typical cocktails and hot chocolate are available to boot.

***********************************************************************

TNDC Recap:

Our largest crowd ever showed up for TNDC at Rouge Ale.  It appears that TNDC is finishing strong.  A hit on the menu were the Blue Balls which Gary said were excellent.  The most interesting comments of the night came from Jeremy and the advice his doctor gave his pregnant wife including that she should have lots of sex because it brings on labor.  In addition, Jeremy shared the difficulties of taking “the child off the boob” and trying to shift his child away from breast feeding.  Finally, the main complaint of the bar is the fact that they charge $5.25 for a Coors Light.  Unacceptable!!!

Old Ship Saloon
298 Pacific Ave
San Francisco, CA 94111
Phone: (415) 788-2222

Internet Review:
Bill Duffy's former Bricks Bar and Grill has undergone an earthquake retrofit, a remodel, reorganization and a name change, but otherwise it's still the same Old Ship. In fact, that's what it's called today, The Old Ship Saloon, which is what it was called when it was first opened in the late 19th Century. Originally it was housed in the hulk of a landlocked ship, the Arkansas, which had been abandoned by the 49ers (the gold guys, not the football guys). After the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, the Old Ship was replaced by a spanking new, modern brick building on Pacific St. at Battery. The bar on the ground floor went through several owners since the Earthquake. As Bricks Bar and Grill it became a local fixture as a popular lunch spot and after work watering hole. Today, The Old Ship Saloon is as popular as ever, with a new, up-to-date menu of tasty, well-served food and a friendly, open bar staffed by knowledgeable, courteous waitpersons (I HATE that word!) and bartenders.

***********************************************************************

TNDC Recap:

The Old Ship Saloon turned out to be an excellent bar with a great feel to it.  Parking was surprisingly easy and the history won us over.  The only downside is that you need to know how to order your food.  It appears that it’s the chefs discretion on how he will cook your food.  The two medium hamburgers came out differently and the medium well was more of a medium rare.  Also, Karl’s Ahi Tuna sandwich was more of a sashimi tuna sandwich.  Bottom line, just know how to order and all will be okay.  Finally just an FYI to avoid any additional awkward moments like the one experienced by AJ…..Jeremy’s dog is dead.

Jade Bar
650 Gough
San Francisco, CA 94102
Phone: (415) 869-1900

From the green-tiled bar to the fresh orchids set into candlelit nooks, all elements work to calm the cocktail psyche. The main floor houses a small central bar and a 20-foot waterfall that empties into a pond below. The trickle runs downstairs to a lounge complete with Asian-styled banquettes and a second bar. All the way upstairs, there's a small shag-carpeted loft.

TNDC Recap:
Karl got a number of comments about updating the website so he decided to finally take action and update at least one weeks worth of notes.  This TNDC was highlighted by the two dollar drink specials.  Paul hadn't experienced a two dollar drink special since he left Eureka.  This bar had many highlights on its three levels including a see through mirror in the men's bathroom that looked out into the bar.  This is were we went down the path were us men thought that women's bathrooms can't get wet or sticky.  We learned that we were wrong because some women squat if the bathroom is gross.  Gary thought "We guys are shooting three pointers...you women are dunking" BUT it appears that sometimes Kayra misses the dunk.  Goodness...after the excitement here we went and got food at Flippers on Hayes.

Kate O'Brien's
579 Howard Street
San Francisco, CA 94105
Phone: (415) 882-7240

Pretension-free patrons consume good beer and grub while listening to eclectic beats. They sit at one of the numerous cafe tables, or sidle up to the long copper bar lined with 16 beer taps announcing some of Europe's (and California's) finest. The brick walls, decorative wrought-iron balcony and Irish memorabilia offer a warm contrast to the city's sleek, minimalist bars.

TNDC Recap:
On earth day TNDC went to Kate O'Brien's and had an interesting conversation about the recycling truck.  It appears that this truck wakes up many people in the mornings and most people were frustrated by it to the point one person wanted to throw eggs so they would leave a welt.  We didn't realize until after the irony of complaining about the recycling trunk on earth day.   We also discussed how May will be a very busy month and there will be no time for Karl's house warming party.

Buena Vista Cafe
2765 Hyde Street
San Francisco, CA 94109
Phone: (415) 474-5044

This place claims to be the birthplace of Irish coffee. Whether that's fact or fiction, the java here is amazingly tasty. Strong coffee is stiffened with a generous shot of Irish whiskey and topped with a float of heavy, sweet cream. Thanks to the bar's wall-to-wall papering of old newspaper and magazine articles touting the joys of this signature drink, few patrons (mostly tourists) try anything else. There's also full menu of slightly upscale coffeeshop bites.

TNDC Recap:
Tonight TNDC went to the birthplace of the Irish Coffee.  Buena Vista has a classic dinner feel with a menu of comfort food.  Any place that serves meatloaf is okay in my book.  Here we learned that personal businesses cards are a big turnoff for the women.  In addition, it was decided that Jeremy should get credit for trying to go attend TNDC even though he went to the next weeks bar (The Tonga room) when no one was there.  That means Kim would get credit for Zeitgeist even though she left before people got there.  The official decides to award half points to each.  Finally, in ranking hotness of TNDC it was noted that before Kim's lap she fixed her hair and then came back and gave the hotness a three because of one buy.....see random bar thought for the opinion on this.

Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar
950 Mason Street
San Francisco, CA 94108

NOTE:  Some TNDCers will be arriving at 6:00 to enjoy the all you can eat buffet.  The Happy Hour buffet is only available from 5:00 - 7:00.  See the buffet details below.

Details about the buffet:
The Happy Hour includes an extensive buffet of Pacific Rim delicacies with items such as spare ribs, vegetable chow mein, pork buns, pot stickers, chicken drummettes, cheese, fresh fruits and crudités. The all-you-can-eat buffet is a 'steal' at only $9.50 per person with a one drink minimum. To complement this feast fit for kings and queens, the tropical restaurant and bar serves tantalizing cocktails at Happy Hour prices.

The Scene
This spot attracts a combination of visiting seniors, fun-loving business types and young ironists looking for a campy night out. The bar itself is splendorous, with fake lilacs vining down from a waterfall guarded by an Easter Island-like totem. Ritualistic masks, puffer fish hanging from the ceiling and grass huts shaped like giant beefeater hats complete the tropical theme. A Spanish galleon run aground forms the dance floor, which overlooks a shimmering tropical pool.

The Draw
The most impressive attraction is the tiki-boat-cum-stage, which floats across the pool with a full band aboard. Dancers take in the island air and gyrate to cheesy pop songs. Be prepared: Every 30 minutes or so, a monsoon pours from the ceiling, spraying unsuspecting dancers with tropical mist.

TNDC Recap:
This paced definitely lived up to its hype on atmosphere. Any place that provides fake rain is a five in my book.  In fact when Amelia enters, thunder occurs.  She does no how to make an entrance.  From this week forward Karl has declared he is shifting is location vote to places more centrally located in the city (this shift coincides with his new location in the city).  Finally, everyone should ask Amelia about her Cuban boy!!!!

Those with a palate for the quaffing of international ales will find refreshing comfort and community at this charming location, where the beer list is pages long and La Chouffe is served on tap. Casual Columbus Street passers-by will note only the small, tidy upstairs bistro, but regulars know to descend the spiral staircase to the cellar bar below. Downstairs, gregarious bartenders dispense a mouth-watering array of elite beers into appropriate stemware, and a menu of mussels, sliders, hearty pub fare and the like provides complement and base. The splendid room includes plenty of seating and a comfortable lounge.

TNDC Recap:
You have to be in the know if you are going to this bar…all the servers are upstairs in the restaurant with no people to wait on while downstairs is a great bar with all the people.  The beer menu is extensive with many MANY pages and over 150 beers.  It’s difficult deciding what beer to get but ask the server for some help if necessary.  Be warned, as Yelp predicted, the service is super slow.  A key finding of the night was when Alvin found out after all these weeks that Paul does not drink beer.  Finally, if you wanted to pickup women, Lisa was going to attend an event with “Pickup Artist” …who is famous for his book he wrote on how to meet women.

NOTE: Special Day for St Patrick's Day!!!!

Green librarian lights and eight TVs dimly illuminate the wood-paneled interior, which is sparsely decorated with Giants' portraits. The place usually fills up after dinner with casual jean-clad locals, and thins out before midnight, with the bar area being the most packed. A smoking room is located adjacent to the bar and on nice days, opens its double doors to the street. The authentic staff is attentive and eager to strike up conversation.

TNDC Recap:
As expected, this place was packed for St Patty’s day.  The big bonus for the night was that they had free corn beef sandwiches and potato salad in honor of the big day.  Gary set the record for much sandwiches eaten by our group…they were really good.  Melanie made her debut appearance at TNDC and we were informed about her man that she has been dating for the past 10 months.  Finally, it turns out that Caroline was randomly at the Irish Bank the week before BUT not for TNDC.  We can’t give her credit since we all met her that night. She’s a friend’s of Elizabeth.

A dark-wood interior, exposed-brick walls and dim lighting make the boisterous patrons feel all warm and cozy--or it could just be the elbow-to-elbow crowd. Tourists and 9-to-5ers flock here for happy hour, while those looking for an escape can flee to the nether reaches of the bar and check out wall-mounted photos of idyllic Irish life. On sunny days, a couple of tables line the European-like alley.

TNDC Recap:
The big news from the night is that Kat is going to Dubai for her job for the next couple of months.  We all need to go visit her while she is over there.  The place was fairly crowded and was a great place to grab a drink over work on a Tuesday night.  Chloe liked it enough to dance to Justin Timberlake.  The only down fall of the night was Paul deciding to order curry at an Irish pub…it didn’t turn out so good (see random bar thought below).  The server was good though and comped his meal.  Finally, AJ earned his email address tonight!!!

A pink neon sign illuminates the entrance of this lively dive. Inside, a beach-motif prevails, with bamboo rods propping a canopy suspended above the bar area. The opposite wall is monopolized by an eye-catching mural perhaps adapted from "Puff the Magic Dragon." There are no specialty drinks or discounted specials, but all the prerequisites are present--full liquor selection and smattering of bottled beers, including Tsing Tao.

TNDC Recap:

Depending on if you are a boy or a girl, tonight's TNDC went to Buddha Bar (boy) or Buddha lounge (girl).  Upon arrival, we were the only ones in the place.  Throughout the night some people would come and go but for the most part we had the place to ourselves.  What made this night great was the liars dice game.  Warning, do not take AJs lead and play against the bartender for drinks.  The good news is that you do want to play against Paul as he ended up owing the group a round.  They don’t server food at Buddha Bar, but you can go to a dive Chinese restaurant across the street for excellent food.  Just don’t ask the server how big the portions of soup are, Paul did this and she immediately left and didn’t come back for five minutes.  Finally, AJ described the stages one goes through after moving in with the girlfriend.  If you want to know them you will have to ask AJ.

Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar Top of the Mark
950 Mason Street
San Francisco, CA 94108
Phone: (415) 772-5278

TNDC Recap:
Oops…upon arriving to Tonga Bar to enjoy the boat stage and fake rainfall we find out that the bar is closed until mid march for renovations.  Therefore Teresa and I headed over to Top of the Mark next door.  Rumor is that Matt and Julie tried to show up as well but went in a different direction.  The Top of the Mark had spectacular views but you had to pay for them.  The drinks and food were expensive.  In addition, there were limited options for food so we had an appetizer and went elsewhere to eat.  It did have live music with a guy playing piano and a dance floor that probably gets very popular on the weekends.

A host of regulars sit at the bar that features 17 taps of mostly European brew, while those craving privacy choose dark-wood tables lining the front wall and quieter back room. Rust-colored walls are decorated with vintage beer signs and hand-painted quotes from the likes of Joyce and Wilde. The crowd is a Valencia-corridor mixed bag, from tattooed Mission denizens and folks of Irish descent watching football to white-collar workers enjoying the bustling happy hour.

TNDC Recap:
Since this was the end of the third quarter there was conversation about what happens after TNDC.  Some suggested that we could visit the top bar an entire year while others suggested WNWC (Wednesday Night Wings Club) or of course MNDC (Monday Night Drinking Club).  Also, it was announced if someone googles "belmont Govi" the TNDC web site has the number one ranking.  Finally, Matt joined a band and we brainstormed potential names including Angry Gremlins, Naked Cowboys, Drunkin Irish Dwarfs, STEAL Magnolias.

A large semicircular bar dominates the front space of this restaurant. Behind it, a seating area featuring wooden booths, high ceilings and an open kitchen creates a warm, somewhat loud dining room. The crowd is a mix of sports fans glued to the television monitors above the bar and SOMA professionals gathering for an after-work bite or drink. Service is kind and orders are quickly processed.

TNDC Recap:
This TNDC can be summed up by two words...Hops Crisis.  This was a beer that they were serving with 11.8% alcohol content.  After two of these beers it caused AJ to get disorientated and use the womens bathroom but supposedly when Kayra caught him he played it "cool" and gave her a hug.  Also at this TNDC, even though Gary lives less than a block away he shows up with Elizabeth over 90 minutes late with both of them having a glow and an extra skip in there steps.  In addition, at this TNDC Paul earned his email address...which we are still waiting for him to claim.  Finally, Kayra gave us the proper spelling of the Brazilian word ¡Peituda!.

NOTE:  We are Celebrating Nichol's b-day at this TNDC

The chic bar and the main dining area, with its muted yellow walls, high ceilings and tiny wire-strung spotlights, are both welcoming and stylish. The same can be said for the service; from the maitre d' to the bartender and waiters, the staff is poised, but not aloof. Although lunch is casual, dinner can be quite a scene, as the pretty people congregate for exotic cocktails.

TNDC Recap:
First, we know this was a high end restaurant when I couldn't even use a napkin for the TNDC rankings but nothing but the best for Nichol's b-day.  For being a nice restaurant we noticed a couple of flaws...first, the light kept flickering, the rice was some what under cooked and finally we had to wait for silverware from our non Uma Thurman waitress look alike after we got our food.  Note...who ever said she look liked Uma Thurman was crazy.  The night though was highlighted by one the best examples of a mullet on an Asian guy.  We tried to be discrete and take a picture of it but it didn't turn out.  In addition, we heard about Nichol's night on the town for her b-day and some huge rat running between her legs while she was throwing up in the gutter.  You should ask Nichol about this story!!

Doobu
1723 Buchanan Street
San Francisco, CA
Phone: (415) 292-6002

Doobu is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Japantown. Though its brightly colored, kooky-lettered sign might lead you to expect a lower quality of food and a pedestrian dining experience, the place is actually kind of elegant — and its prices reflect that. Soup (available in 10 varieties) costs $9, while non-salad entrees cost more along the lines of $11 to $15. Every weekday from 11 am to 3 pm, Doobu serves a lunch special for $8 that includes tofu soup, tofu salad, 3 sides, and either galbi, bulgogi, spicy pork, or chicken teriyaki. Before the main course, diners are served six or so bowls of appetizers such as kimchi and glass noodles, and each diner is provided a personal-size deep-fried fish. With the check, each person gets a small bottle of something that could only be described by those unacquainted with Korean food as drinkable mango-strawberry yogurt.

TNDC Recap:
A rainy day and who knows what causes one of our smallest TNDC turn outs.  So far at every TNDC we have at at least two people but his one was close.  For the two people that came out we discussed how dedicated Alvin is for rearranging his entire work teams schedule so that he could leave work early on Tuesdays for TNDC while everyone else stays late.  Also, this place was interesting because it was the first place I've been to were you could watch the food network while eating.  To top it off when you are done with your meal you get a free cup of Oxni.  If you want to know what this is then you will just have to go try this place out.

A pool table, witty signs, and friendly bartenders. Asking for anything more is just pretentious. The online jukebox and fireplace make Zeki's a neighborhood favorite, even if you're not from the neighborhood. This isn't the place for super trendy crowds or late night dance parties, but if you like a good happy hour and place to kick back with your friends on a weeknight, Zeki's can't be beat. The weekends draw a larger crowd and prove that for all it's local charm, Zeki's still can't shake those weekend party goers.

SPECIAL:  DINE ABOUT TOWN TNDC....
Reservations required, please signup via evite:

The main dining room feels like a sprawling 1960s conversation pit, with the hip and the moneyed swiveling in mid-century captain chairs, checking each other out from tweedy orange banquettes. Everything glows sexily under the mod dome, back-lit in peachy pink. Downtempo music and champagne-fueled chatter from the neighboring lounge sail through the unobstructed room.

TNDC Recap:
This was one of our largest TNDCs with 11 people showing up to enjoy Dine About Town at Frisson.  As usual, our resident tech support guy Paul was able to answer a couple questions and assist Kat who was at TNDC as part of an 172 Connecticut house reunion.  Four ex-roommates made it out and decided to try and get together once a month at TNDC.  By far the highlight of the night was Adele's bone stimulator.  Evidently she is required to use the bone stimulator per doctors orders.  Interesting.  Finally, there was some conversation about Keenan living in the great city of Florianopolis and the Harpy eagle that Gary and Karl saw in Brazil and it's ability to eat small monkeys.

Dark, spacious booths line the enormous storefront windows, and undersized tables dot the hardwood floors of this stylish boite. Tempura fish tacos, a hanger steak with scallion mash and a charcuterie plate of sopressata, ahi tuna tartare and sauteed mussels are among the other offerings.

TNDC Recap:
A lot was learned about Alvin tonight when we discovered that gay man love Alvin.  A couple months a go it appears that a gay men was hitting on Alvin and buying him drinks but he doesn't realize anything is out of the ordinary.  It is only when Amelia meets the boy that her gaydar goes off.  Lesson learned....Amelia has amazing gaydar.  On a different note, the food at Solstice was quite tasty with Karl giving it high marks for the Mac n Cheese .  Supposedly Andalu has some really god Mac n Cheese as well.   Paul complained about the Muni service...he had to wait 17 minutes for the #24.  Gavin needs to improve this.

NOTE:   SPECIAL TIME 5:30 to go with start of Sugar Bowl (Hawaii vs Georgia)!!!

Waitresses in shiny tan nylons and tight, orange, '70s track shorts serve up beer and pub grub at this proudly "tacky yet unrefined" sports bar-restaurant. Tables are packed with men of all ages, from high-powered suits to college guys in baseball caps. While salads, sandwiches and shellfish are on the menu, most folks order chicken wings--available in six levels of spice intensity, from mild to super-hot 911.

TNDC Recap:
It was an interesting Tuesday Night DRINKING Club since 4 of the 6 participants didn't even drink a beer.  I guess that can be expected on New Years day after a long night of partying.  Tonight we did welcome in three new TNDC  participants and there was a concern that since we are just counting total nights for each participant that they would not be able to get a very high number seeing that we are over half way done.  It was suggested that we do a percentage of nights participated over total nights to reflect their involvement...this seems like a lot of work though.  We will require future TNDC nights to discuss this further and to see if we should implement it.

Thin bamboo rods and quirky, original artwork line the walls of this small hideout. Attractive college coeds mingle on a continuous red banquette snaking the left side of the space, while 20- and 30-something locals sit at the under-lit bar. The bar's back shelf is also aglow, highlighting various sojus (rice wine) which are mixed with fruit juices to produce specialty cocktails like the mojito-inspired Ginju.

TNDC Recap:
We pondered a number of things at this TNDC including whether Alvin could compete with Seal for Heidi Klum and also why do men like breast so much.  In addition, we found out that Amelia looks fabulous to Gay guys.  Two highlights from the night was the all girls birthday party and Alvin teaching us how to play a new game....Sex, Kill, Marry were you select three people and then select which person you would have sex with, kill, or marry.  Very interesting stuff....especially when you play with people you know.

Pig and Whistle
2801 Geary Blvd
San Francisco, CA 94118
Phone: (415) 885-4779

This down-home spot has hunting bugles on the wall and ska bands on the jukebox--there's even a picture of a pig drinking beer, hung behind the bar like an employee-of-the-month. For sport, there's a dartboard and billiards table in the back room. In addition to a bevy of tap beers, there's also a food menu with items like shepherd's pie and black pudding.

TNDC Recap:
The Pig and Whistle felt really far away from everything in San Francisco and proves that most of us don't get out to the avenues enough.  Once there, the TNDC crowd found large food portions and good beer.  In addition, the closeness to a university was also felt with what look like a group of under aged girls drinking.  Of course they were probably legit and we are just getting old.

Fish Bowl Bar & Grill
1854 Divisadero St
San Francisco, CA 94115
Phone: (415) 775-3630

Large plate-glass windows at the entrance give this small pub a fish bowl-like quality. The aqua walls are also adorned accordingly--mermaids, surfboards and seashells. The crowd consists of Pac Heights' 20- and 30-somethings meeting for a few drinks. It's typically friendly and laid-back at happy hour, and crowded and loud on weekend nights. Crowd-pleasers like Al Green and the Stones fill the jukebox.

TNDC Recap:
There was some pressure filling out the ranking for the Fishbowl seeing that it is only 2 doors down from Frankie's AND that the food for the Fishbowl actually comes from Frankie's kitchen.  Looking at the rankings table below you can actually see that Food and Location/Parking are fairly close.  It would appear that being two doors south on Divisadero makes parking at Fishbowl a bit easier.  This convenience comes at a price because the food suffers a bit from being transferred a further distance to your tables at the Fish bowl.  The ranking definitely say to park at Fishbowl, go to Frankie's for drink specials or food and then stay longer for the Atmosphere and Hotness of people.  On a separate note, there was discussions about starting a TNDC book club with the following rule being that we will not allow any books that appear on the Oprah book list.  Also, we welcomed to newbies to TNDC....Megan and Aaron.  Finally, we have learned not to misplace Jessica's email address.

Operating in various locations within the city since 1893, this restaurant has a long history of serving hearty Bavarian dishes to downtown diners.  In a dining room punctuated by Herman Richter murals, a rosewood bar and decorative beer steins, patrons sup on classic offering like Weiner Schnitzel, bratwurst, Hungarian goulash and potato pancakes, while the less adventurous stick to America staples like burgers, steaks and grilled salmon.  Several meatless entrees on the menu satisfy vegetarians.’

TNDC Recap:
WELCOME BACK PAUL.....who made an appearance tonight since missing most of the 2nd quarter.  This week's TNDC coincided with the schools of the Big Ten happy hour so we and a large number of Ohio State people show up.  The talk of the night was the fact that we had a seven dollar cover charge (but it did include one drink) and that there was a woman with enormous breast sitting at the table behind us.  There was a gravitational pull coming from her table the cause all the guys eyes to continue to gravitate towards her.  The night was topped off with us recruiting hopefully a couple new people to TNDC.  Hopefully they will show up at future nights.

The two veteran bartenders/owners invest quality time in customer conversation, regardless of whether they're a neighborhood or after-work regular. Fellow bar and restaurant workers also make up a large part of the clientele, as can be seen by the long shelf lined with empty bottles of Fernet, their favorite poison. What was once a bushy, palm-filled bar has been deforested, sleeked up and conjoined with the restaurant next door. Black wood tables--low with leather cushions and booths in the lounge area--and wicker fixtures are offset by yellow walls. The occasional monkey or bird statuary keep the venue's original tiki feel, though the space is an upscale spot for a date, cocktail or inexpensive meal. Menu items include homemade Thai beef jerky, curries, Lao-style barbequed chicken and specialty Thai salads.

TNDC Recap:
Tonight we learned that Lingba is very accurate with there pouring of Stella.  It would appear that they are no filling the cup full BUT after further inspection we realized that it is filled exactly to the .4cl line.  Tonight we made the decision to add  Google Ads to the TNDC web site to make some money.  Also, Gary is suppose to find out about the dart league.

Located on an unassuming block, this offbeat find is like something out of David Lynch's kooky "Twin Peaks." The bumpy walls give the interior a log-cabin feel, with peculiar taxidermy to boot. Patrons sit at stools surrounding a winding wood bar, which boasts turntables and a TV that may be airing kitschy flicks (sometimes augmented with foreign subtitles). Above the bar, fake flames flicker behind miniature trees and chalkboards reveal rotating drink specials. Toward the back, a giant sasquatch stands near a faux fireplace.

TNDC Recap:
AN EARTHQUAKE HAPPENED DURING THIS TNDC....but the amazing thing is that the Bigfoot lodge is built so solid that none of us felt it.  The earthquake measured 5.6 and lasted for a couple seconds.  This place was also amazing because of the Sasquatch...you have to go there and check it out for yourself.

Irish and Indian might seem like strange bedfellows for a North Beach locale, but one visit to this enormous, low-key hangout and the combination seems clear: Part atmospheric pub with more than 200 beers and wines (including all-day $5 pitchers of PBR); part exotic dining room with sit-down Indian fare including curries, dosas and utthappam. A games room with two pool and two air hockey tables, arcade games and darts, and souvenir shop complete the smorgasbord.

TNDC Recap:
First, those who take MUNI here LOVE this place.  They went on and on about the number of buses one can take to Kennedy's.  Also, we selected a good night to go here because between the 15th and 20th of every month one can buy drink tokens for $2.50 and buy any beer with them.  If you don't ask for a token first then you will have to pay the usual five dollars as Greg found out.  In addition, they serve 2 dollar PBRs.  Bottom line...a great place to go every month between the 15th and 20th.

#17
Utah Saloon
500 4th St
San Francisco, CA 94107

This pretension-free speakeasy has been around since before Prohibition. The narrow front room features a wooden bar-back imported from Belgium, TV broadcasting local ballgames and mascot-like elk's head. Rock-and-roll-friendly patrons grab a seat at one of the few high tables bordering the window or belly up to the bar, which displays a tongue-in-cheek "Employee of the Decade" poster. Service is friendly yet laid-back to the extent that diners may need to request napkins.

TNDC Recap:
Two important items are learned at this TNDC; First, Belmont Govi swears that it only takes him 20 minutes to get back to Belmont (we have our doubts) AND second that Gary learns that there are 26 letters in the alphabet and when multiplied by 2 that can equate to 52 weeks.

Random Bar Thought:  Bartender tells Govi to come back in two minutes....

IL Pirata
2007 16Th St
San Francisco, CA 94103

This hangout consists of two large indoor spaces, plus an open-air side patio. One room houses a wooden bar where regulars sit and watch sports on two large-screen TVs, surrounded by framed Budweiser posters and a revolving Bass sign. The other room features an ornate wall mural of the deep ocean and large booth-style vinyl couches. After 9pm, cafeteria tables in the second room are removed to create a dance space.

TNDC Recap:
Three newbies showed up to TNDC where we celebrated Bert's brief welcome back to San Francisco.  The TNDCers found that the bar would be a good place to go on a sunny afternoon to enjoy some dart playing outside.  We got a full recap of Alvin's Iceland trip including sled dogging and horseback riding.  In addition, when inquiring about drink specials the bartenders response is "Everything is cheap right now".

Harry's Bar - San Francisco
2020 Fillmore Street
San Francisco, CA 94115

As the work day ends, this place fills with well-dressed, white-collar-types looking to loosen their ties. It's an ideal place to meet a first date or group of friends. The drinks are expertly mixed and the standard bar fare is competent. The right side of this two-tiered rectangular bar features an elevated dining area with wood tables nestled closely together. On the left, stools line an expansive, dark-cherry bar.

TNDC Recap:
A huge showing came out to Harry's with TNDC reaching double digits with even a couple newbie showing up including Luis who heard that if he show up at the bar his name could end up on the internet.  The seating arrangements were less than idea though and it was difficult to mingle and chat with the entire TNDC crowd.  In addition, the voting seemed to be influenced by who lived close to the bar.

The Alembic
1725 Haight St
San Francisco, CA 94117

This one-room escape feels cozy yet spacious thanks to high ceilings, soft lighting and barren mustard walls. Views of the Upper-Haight hubbub are visible from two tall tables in front, while a dizzying list of liquors, beers, and specialty cocktails is squeezed onto a chalkboard above the stained-wood bar.

TNDC Recap:
What started out as excitement over the menu quickly turned to disappointment when the food came.  The waitress explained to us that they were small portions so we ordered the first half of the menu (except for item 1).  The items included heirloom tomato and grilled cheese, mussels, fries, sliders, mac and cheese, and gnocchi.  The first to come out was the grilled cheese....we were expecting a grilled cheese sandwich on maybe sourdough bread but nope this was really just grilled cheese with a tomato paste like substance.  All though we were expecting small this was just down right tiny.  See picture below which consists of a quarter of the grilled cheese.  Bottom line after dinner we were all still hungry so we went next door to Escape from New York Pizza and had pizza (see picture below).

Participants:  Elizabeth, Gary, Karl, Paul

Bruno's
2389 Mission St
San Francisco, CA 94110

In the main dining room, a montage mural of iconic figures like Donald Duck and Hummel figurines hangs over leather seats and a modern fireplace complements the red couches and leopard-print carpet. The bar area faces a long, high-set table where patrons watch movies on the plasma-screen TV. An adjacent, smaller room is consistent with the theme. Toward the back, an additional bar offers live music--usually jazz--with a cover charge at the door.

TNDC Recap:
The remodeled Bruno's is a hit among the TNDC crowd.  The atmosphere is top notch and they even provide free chips and salsa to the happy hour crowd.  A rare fireplace inside the bar adds to the atmosphere but couldn't keep us warm from the chilly San Francisco breeze coming through the door.  During the night, a number of tech support questions were answered by Paul concerning Gary's computer and Teresa's TV.  Paul's advice to both issues were to get a new computer and get a new TV.  A procedure was discussed on how Gary can save all his pictures off his old computer's hard drive.  Finally, the most important discovery of this bar was the happy hour price...a burger AND beer runs only 8 bucks!!!

Frankie's Bohemian Cafe
1862 Divisadero St
San Francisco, CA 94115-2517

This Czech-American corner cafe is a hugely popular hangout for local 30-somethings. With its friendly vibe and eclectic decor--blood-red walls and a blue star-studded ceiling--it's no wonder it's always packed. The eclectic menu features Americanized offerings such as pasta, burgers and salads. But the most popular dish is brambory, a classic Czech dish made with shredded potato and zucchini and then formed into a crisp, 10-inch pancake.

TNDC Recap:
A HISTORIC TNDC.....we all watched Barry Bonds hit homerun number 756 at around 9:00ish on the one little TV in the bar.  Also, an important highlight was that Angelina Jolie works as a bartender at Frankie's...either that or it was her look alike but we all want to believe it was actually the real deal.

Euchre Night

TNDC Recap:
At Euchre night we drew cards to determine who should be partners.  A powerhouse team was created when Gary and Karl drew each other ONLY then to be dominated and lose 10-1....what an upset.  The first place team of Chris and Govi won it all....but didn't get their first place trophy since the trophy was a no show.  In addition, the 2nd place trophy was left at home but thankfully a replace trophy (a can of Pringles) was purchased.

House of Shields

About House of Shields
This spot features entertainment and decor from the early 1900s: bronze art-nouveau statues, high-backed wooden booths, tall ceilings and a majestic glass-backed bar, complete with tiny shields engraved into it. Happy hour brings the suits, but at night, electronic-music aficionados cram into the small dance level overlooking the bar. In this elevated space, DJs typically mix new wave, house, funk or jazz.

TNDC Recap:
This TNDC saw us discussing some of the goals of TNDC...including going 1 year of drinking on every Tuesday and accepting "Call in" for those away from San Francisco who could not participate in the fun.  In addition, we have decide to rank every bar with the below criteria.

Participants:  Karl, Gary, Rachel, Scott, AJ and Elizabeth

Magnolia

About Magnolia:
The Haight-Ashbury's only brewpub combines good beer, fresh food and friendly service in a comfortable pub setting. Located at the bustling intersection of Haight and Masonic, Magnolia is a refuge from the pace of urban living; a place to relax among friends. The pub fosters the tradition of classic English and European ale houses and the best of San Francisco's unique style.

Magnolia Website

TNDC Recap:
Although a small TNDC showing of only 3 people came out to enjoy Magnolia, this bar is one of the favorites for TNDC crowd.  Great happy hour prices and good food.  Also on this night, the executive decision was made to give TNDC a web site so no one could complain about not being on the email invite.

Baseball All Star Game
Since the All Star Game was taking place on Tuesday we had a rare Thursday TNDC at....Bar None

About Bar None:
Situated below street level, a small patio sits at the entrance. Once inside, patrons encounter a clean, spacious bar room with hardwood floors and a classic, long wooden bar. The back houses a sunken game room complete with pool table, arcade games and two dart boards. TV monitors hang throughout the bar, tuned to sporting events. A good-sized dining room with skylights overhead keeps the place well lit.

Bar None Website

TNDC Recap:
We coupled this TNDC with the Tight Ends football teams Awards Banquet.  In addition to the awards the crew tried out our possible winter league sport, darts.  The highlight of the night would be that the majority of the people showed up in their Tight Ends orange shirts!!!

Edinburgh Castle Pub (rare non-school night TNDC for Trivia Night)

About Edinburgh Castle Pub:
If King Arthur belonged to a fraternity, it might have looked something like this place: iron chandeliers, coats of arms and tankards hanging on the walls to impress the coeds. The young collegiate-looking patrons form their own roundtables near the bar or climb up to the parapets on the second floor, peering down on the lucky jousters playing pool.

TNDC Recap:
A large group of people came out for Trivia Night at Edinburgh Castle (supposedly the best trivia night in the city).  After a fast start with 15 points after the first two rounds we ended up with only 7 additional points the remaining five rounds.  The questions were extremely difficult and we were thinking slowly because of the pitchers of beer (yes, I'm making excuses for our poor showing).  Another good TNDC night though.

Hi Dive

About Hi Dive:
Hi Dive (“It's an oxymoron: an upscale dive bar with a view”), a great little bar at Pier 28 ½ between Bryant and Harrison on the Embarcadero.

TNDC Recap:
Gary shows up on time (7:00) only to find that no one else is there.  Since he had a long day, he leaves all to find out that "the women" decided to get food before TNDC and not show up until 8:00ish.  FYI - TNDC activities include food....no eating should occur before TNDC.

#4
Zeitgeist

About Zeitgeist:
A black door featuring a skull-like parody of the Playboy bunny gives way to a shed-like interior. Punk-influenced tunes fill the spacious main room, where the focal point is the bar's approximately 30 draft beers (including Great White). Beneath a collage of signs, friendly, tattooed bartenders chat with grizzled regulars (many of whom are art students). Further back, a small room holds a food counter, pool table and two pinball machines.

TNDC Recap:
The largest TNDC yet had over 10 people show up to enjoy drinking pitchers of beer on Zeitgeist's great outdoor patio.  The weather was amazing and after a few pitchers were consumed the gang went off into the mission for pizza.

Participants:  Kim (half credit for showing up and leaving before everyone made it.)

Satellite TNDC performed in Fortaleza, Brazil

TNDC Recap:
The TNDC crew was suppose to meet up at the Hi Dive but too much drinking occurred on Monday (Memorial Day) that no one wanted to go out so TNDC was cancelled for the week.  Karl, on vacation, did not know TNDC was cancelled so he held a satellite TNDC in Fortaleza Brazil and did a TNDC toast at 7:30 back to everyone in San Francisco.

Suppenkuche (Inaugural TNDC)

About Suppenkuche:
With its white walls, plank floors and long pine tables, this spare space offers a Teutonic sensibility to match its hearty German fare. The expansive front room is dominated by a wooden-topped bar, while the smaller back dining area holds two communal tables. Delicate, vibrantly-hued dragonfly sculptures add a dash of color to the minimalist space. Large, boisterous parties and waiters bustling by with steins of foamy beer create a jovial mood, but the conversational din can be overwhelming.

Suppenkuche Website

TNDC Recap:
Gary, Monique and Karl showed up for the inaugural TNDC.  The main confusion for the night is that although all communication says TNDC starts at 6:30...that actually means closer to 7:00.  Great location with good beer and food.
